Dear Pastor McIntire–Since you brought your religious opinions to the forum of Letter to the Editor, permit me to respond in the same way.
You are of the opinion that Jesus is not progressive, referring to his words about him not coming to abolish the Law or the Prophets, but to fulfill them. You state that we ought to look at Jesus as being redemptive by having faith in him, which will get us crucified and buried.
You base your opinion on the authority of a text (Scripture). However, when you use a text it seems to me you ought to use the whole text, not just sections that suit your purpose.
In the Book of Revelation, chapter 21, (also Scripture) words are spoken from the throne of Heaven, saying that the old has passed away and a New Jerusalem will take its place: “Behold, I make ALL things new!”
It seems to me that those words lead us to believe, that we need to have a progressive view of life, not the conservative which you seemingly prefer us to have. The chapter also speaks of the spirit of God (Life) dwelling within us and among us, not in temples, aka, churches, mosques, synagogues, etc.
Let me state that personally I don’t believe either texts have any divine inspiration or divinely sanctioned validity. They speak for themselves. I only compare them believing, that in any argument one should not pick and choose “words of authority” that bolster and promote one’s own preconceived opinions.
P.S.: Even the pope said recently that God likes something new, contrary to what some of his bishops would like him to say! Oops!
