The morning of Christmas Eve, while preparing for the joyous opportunity to worship that evening, thoughts of what fun little gifts to get for a couple of friends kept popping up. Looking out my office window, and seeing God’s pine trees covered with snow, this bit of poetry came, a gift from God to me, and for me to share with them.
Thanks be to God for the gift of God’s love and grace, made known most clearly in Jesus, our Lord, son of God, born an infant, as one of us.
A little Christmas gift for a friend
i thought first of music, a cd, or a book,
and then thought of trinkets
(something fun just to wink at)
But then
what could be lovelier
than snow on a pine
and
what
can contain
acknowledging the Divine?
it’s Christmas! we cherish the news
it’s Christmas! we gather in pews
it’s Christmas! we long for more time
with friends, winter colors, with words that might rhyme;
with music, with cookies, with delight at its prime
then i thought as i hunted
how the fun gift i wanted
could be but a token—
not matching at all
all the words to be spoken:
Indeed! It is Christmas!
Incarnation! God with us!
and now
more than anything, ever, no matter how fine
in the birth of our Savior,
in Spirit Son Father
God
gives us a way
to know:
The Divine.
