In the fall of 1990, I was a sophomore at Cook County School High School. I remember taking both biology and what at that time was called, “home economics.” Home economics gave us a little taste of sewing, a bit of personal finance, but mainly it was a class on the basics of cooking. I still recall, even at that time over 25 years ago, thinking, “Man, these classrooms are kind of old.”
It is now 2018, and thanks to our community voting in favor of a School Building Bond, our district has been able to build three state-of-the-art science rooms and a new culinary arts space that features a commercial grade kitchen.
In addition, the school has been able to upgrade many facets of our facilities including a new bus garage, furniture upgrades, and much-needed maintenance to our roofs.
Our previous science wing was built in 1962 and the original home economics classroom was built in 1952. We now have a much-needed update and the new facilities look amazing.
As a district, we are very thankful for this support. Our community has allowed us the opportunity to give our kids a competitive and engaging educational facility. Our new spaces look wonderful and the added space has allowed more flexibility in the classroom setting.
The school would like to say thanks by hosting an open house event on Friday, December 14 from 4 to 6 p.m. We welcome all in the community to come and check out the new culinary arts space and the new science rooms in the upper hallway.
In addition, the school will hold a community auction in our cafeteria of used items that the district is no longer using, which will include items like refrigerators, stoves, and other used furniture items.
As a former student and teacher, current principal, and proud parent of four Cook County students, I thank you for your support of Cook County Schools. It takes an entire community for a school to excel.
Please join us on December 14 and check out the new facilities. Afterwards feel free to stop up at the gymnasium and watch some of our wonderful student-athletes compete in a home basketball game!
