A day of Civil War history in Grand Marais




Many residents may know that the tiny hamlet of Colvill was named after a Civil War soldier, Col. William Colvill. However, they may not know that he was commander of the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Regiment.

Learn more about Col. Colvill and many other Minnesotans who fought and died in the Civil War at the Cook County Historical Society Museum on Saturday, Aug. 24. At 10 a.m. Wayne Jorgenson, author of Every Man Did His Duty: Pictures and Stories of the Men of the 1st Minnesota will share what he learned while researching his book. He will be followed by a discussion with Bill Dalin, a Civil War re-enactor, at 11 a.m.

After a break for lunch, community members will have the opportunity to visit with John D. Cox, author of Gettysburg: A History for the People at 1 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public.
