From the birth of the island rising from the water to the animals that swam or floated or walked on ice to the jewel of Lake Superior, Julian May captures the magic and mystique of Isle Royale in this 30-page book.
Written in 1968, this children’s book is largely about Isle Royale’s moose and the inclusion of wolves that come to the island and restore balance when they cull the older and younger moose from a too-large population.
The story is written by Julian May and illustrated by John Schoenherr, both of whom are now deceased. Over her life, Julian wrote over 250 science fiction, fantasy, horror, and children’s books between 1956 and 1981.
John Schoenherr was a prolific illustrator of science fiction and children’s books. He won the Caldecott Medal for his illustrations in the book Owl Moon written by Jane Yolen. He passed away in 2010 and was posthumously inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 2015.
Famous Isle Royale moose/wolf researcher L. David Mech offered comments to May when she wrote the book, and he is back with a note updating readers on the changes that have taken place on Isle Royale over the years.
Overall, this is a good book for kids and fans of the Big Island. The text is simple, easy to understand, and the illustrations are first rate.
