99-mile bike race slated for June 11

Bicycling enthusiast and advocate Adam Harju updated the Tofte town board on March 10 regarding the progress of plans for the Lutsen 99 mountain bike race sponsored by Lifetime Fitness.

The June 11 race will take bicyclists from the Ski Hill Road in Lutsen west to the Sawbill Trail area and east to the Devil’s Track Lake area in Grand Marais—and back—via numerous trails and roads on June 11.

The route changed slightly because of a U.S. Forest Service concern about protected vegetation along the originally proposed route. Snowmobiling and mountain biking are allowed on that route, Harju said, but the Forest Service does not want to allow it for a special use such as this race.

“This will be fun,” said Tofte Supervisor Paul James. “This could be a really good early-season event for this area.” The event will also include a 39-mile race.

Harju’s presentation also met with enthusiasm at the February meeting of the Lutsen Township.
