50 is just a number

Contrary to popular belief, life doesn’t end when you turn 50. Our bodies don’t power down like a cell phone with a low battery. Our mind doesn’t begin to mothball pertinent knowledge. The work and accomplishments we have achieved do not cease to exist. Instead, once we reach 50 we continue to make contributions to our workplace and community. While this may seem like common sense, too many people still view the age of 50 as a burden; something to be dreaded.

For decades, people have been ushered into their 50s with black balloons and sad satirical cards. Society’s view of confronting ageism has been to rebrand 50 as “the new 40.”

It is time for a change. It is time to recognize that 50 is just a number and that our worth to our employer, community and state is not diminished because of our age. It is time to change the stories we tell ourselves about aging. That’s why AARP is teaming up with Pollen, a Minnesota nonprofit (www.pollenmidwest.org) that builds community, to honor 50 Minnesotans over 50 who are making an impact in our state.

The final 50 Over 50 list will be built from individual nominations, which can be made at www.50over50MN.org. An independent selection committee will choose the final list. In addition to a transparent selection process, another goal of our list is that it be more diverse than traditional “under” lists that tend to focus on the business sector. Instead, 50 Over 50 will honor individuals in the categories of nonprofit, arts, business, community building and age disruptors.

The world is changing. People are living longer than ever before. They are remaining active in their workplaces and communities long after they turn 50. They are not slowing down or leaving their passions behind to pursue time in an easy chair. They have unique stories that deserve to be told and we’re going to tell them.

To nominate someone in your community visit www.50over50mn.org by May 13, 2016.
