2nd annual Northern Fibers Retreat Feb. 15-20




What could be better than focusing on fibers in the heart of winter? Over Presidents’ Day weekend, Feb 15-20, North House Folk School and the Grand Marais Art Colony in Grand Marais will host the second annual Northern Fibers Retreat celebrating all manner of fiber craft.

On the schedule are over 25 inspiring courses including weaving, bead embroidery, origami, and felting. Again there will be a twohour family course, Fibers for Kids, Saturday morning, Feb. 18, hosted by members of Cook County’s Northwoods Fiber Guild. Community gatherings are also on the schedule, so if a course doesn’t fit into your weekend you can still take part. Gather up your latest project and visit the Art Colony on Friday, Feb. 17 for a free Show and Share session from 7 to 9 p.m. hosted by the Northwoods Fibers Guild.

Are you more in the mood for kicking up your heels? The North Shore Music Association presents Celtic band McInnis’ Kitchen at North House on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for kids 12 and under. Tickets are $5 off for students in Fiber Retreat courses and will be available at the door.

Finally, Lunch and Learn sessions will be held Friday and Saturday at noon. Each session will feature a speaker and lunch catered by a local restaurant. Friday’s topic is Peace Fibres: Stitching a Soulful World with Karen Lohn at North House. Saturday features What Can You Make Paper Out Of with Nancy Daley at the Art Colony. Registration is required for Lunch and Learns and cost is $12 per person. Call North House or the Art Colony to register.
