The 29th annual Sawtooth International Ski Races will once again provide opportunities for classical and freestyle skiers of all ages and ability levels. The event is being held on a different date than in years past, to accommodate the heavy schedule of races around the region. Skiers will take to the Pincushion Mountain trails on New Year’s Eve Day, December 31.
Held at Pincushion, the 10k classical race will begin at 10 a.m. with a self-seed mass start. The 20k freestyle race will begin at 11 a.m. and will also feature a mass start.
Separate awards will be given for the 10k and 20k races. Junior skiers are encouraged to enter the 10k event.
For those up to the challenge, start times allow skiers to enter both classical and freestyle events. An award will be given to the male and female winner of the combined events.
Advance registration is encouraged. Registration forms can be found on-line at www.pincushionstrails.org. Or, skiers can also register the day of the race between 8 and 9 a.m. at the Pincushion Mountain warming chalet.
Organizers could use some assistance with the race. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Richard Swanson at (218) 370-1119 or e-mail rswanson@boreal.org.
The Cook County Youth Ski League will sponsora pasta feed on Friday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Cook County Community Center. The community center is a half block away from the school, just look for the hockey rink.
For those traveling to the invite, assistance with lodging is available from the Grand Marais Visitors Center. Call tollfree to 888-922-5000 or log on to wwwgrandmarais.com.
