Along with pretty much everything else, the announcement on Thursday, July 30, that the Superior Fall Trail Races were cancelled came as no shock.
The events, scheduled for September 11-12, covered a marathon, 50 and 100-mile races over the rugged Superior Hiking Trail.
Race Director John Storkamp sent an email to registered runners and helpers last Thursday that stated, “With great sadness, today we announced the cancellation of the 2020 Superior Fall Trail Race… I cannot tell you how much we are going to miss seeing you all this Fall – this race has been such a huge part of so many of our lives for so long.”
Storkamp noted, “As of today and for the foreseeable future, Minnesota State guidelines do not allow an event of our size and scope to take place, even with modifications. Our major permitting agencies are bound by state guidelines and are administering our permits accordingly. As a result, we are unable to proceed with the Superior Fall Trail Race.”
The event was also, “out of the hands of our permitting agencies. State guidelines and ultimately the trajectory of the virus made this decision for all of us,” noted Storkamp, who added that the safety of the runners, volunteers and communities that could be affected by the event “should be the greatest priority.”
In closing John said, “Thank you all so much for your dedication to the Superior Trail Race, we could not do it without you. It has been a great run thus far, and we are looking forward to better days when we can come together again.”
