Camp Booshway Stephan Veit demonstrates how the competitors in the Rugged Voyageur should sample the “high wine” in the Rugged Voyageur contest. High wine is actually not wine, but a distillate containing a very high percentage of alcohol. In the Rugged Voyageur Contest, it is just water.

A fierce competition at Rendezvous Days is the Rugged Voyageur Contest. Thirteen voyageurs competed to see who could carry a pack, press beaver pelts, kiss the cook, drink some “high wine” and start a fire the fastest. This year’s winner was John Hayes of Cohasset, MN, shown here preparing to start a fire. His fire-starting skills gave him the edge over his competitors.
