2011 golf season under way at Gunflint Hills

The annual spring meeting of Gunflint Hills Golf Club was held May 24, with Club President John Lindell in charge.

Discussion ensued regarding how to get some younger blood into the club and its events. President John was going to “talk it up” with others.

The leagues for this summer are set up and going. The men’s league started on May 26. The senior men, age 50 and older, will start on June 7. The women’s league starts June 7 and the couples’ league will play their first match on June 10. There will be time schedules at the clubhouse for each team. Club membership remain at $10, and the fee for each league is the same with the exception of the couples, which is $5 for each pair. Dues are payable at the clubhouse.

There is still some time to join a league in the next couple weeks. Contact Mike or Bob Spry for the men; Walt Mianowski for the senior men; Rosemary Lamson for the women’s league and Ray or El Sjoberg for the couples’ league.

The club will try to have “mixed two-balls” again this year. No dates have been set, so watch for a sign-up place at the clubhouse.

Discussion was held on what to do about rain days for the leagues and it was decided to cancel the game and split the points 9 and 9 between the teams, forget that game and go on to the next week with the usual schedule. That includes the seniors, women and couples. The men’s team can determine what they want to do.

Member Chuck Futterer passed away recently and the family requested memorials be donated to a fund at Gunflint Hills. Donations to Chuck’s memory may be made at the clubhouse or in the mail to Mike at P.O. Box 820, Grand Marais, MN 55604. Please designate it to the Futterer Memorial.

The Gunflint Hills course came through our miserable winter in fine style. A grouse has been drumming up a storm behind #6 green. It was the first time this writer had witnessed it. I had heard it, but there he was on a birch log and sending out vibes to any lady grouse that was interested. I saw the mud turtle sunning on the bank of the pond on #9 and the wild flowers are beautiful.

So you see, there’s more than golf going on at Gunflint Hills!
