2010 lodging tax revenue higher than previous year




The Grand Marais Area Tourism Association saw more revenue from lodging taxes in 2010 than it had seen in any of the previous five years. The $196,118 that wasgeneratedwasa6percentincrease over the previous year’s revenue.

The Gunflint Trail Tourism Association saw an increase of 5.7 percent over the previous year, with an income of $94,573. The greatest amount it received between 2005 and 2010 was $101,099 in 2005.

The Lutsen-Tofte Tourism Association had the biggest—a 9.2 percent—increase over the year before, although 2009 had brought in 11.1 percent less than the year before that. The greatest amount it received between 2005 and 2010 was $529,660 in 2008. Last year brought $525,206.

In 2010, the combined total of all three tax districts was $815,898, an 8.6 percent increase over 2009, although 2009 had been down by 8.3 percent from the year before that.

The percentages of increase over the previous year compared only those establishments that had sent their revenues in by the time the report was generated. Dollar figures were rounded to the nearest dollar.

1% local option sales tax

In the first 10 months the 1% local option sales tax was collected, it brought in $897,197.76. If the trend continues, it would bring in $1,196,263.68 its first year.

The first month of collection was last April.
