Cook County Community Fund 2010 grant recipients gathered at the Grand Marais home of Howard and Bonnie Gay Hedstrom in July to learn if their grant applications had been awarded. The gathering also gave recipients past and present, members of the community fund board, and community members an opportunity to learn more about the Cook County Community Fund.

Recipients include the Coalition of Lake Associations, $500 for citizen workshops; Cook County Higher Education, $1,000 for a guest lecture series; Grand Marais Art Inc., $1,500 for a Kids Art program; Just Kids Dental Health, $1,000 for Cook County school-based dental clinics; North Shore Collaborative, $1,000 for learning opportunities through stories; North Shore Health Care Foundation, $800 for care partners patient and family educational materials; North Shore Music Association, $500 for Michael Johnson performance at Radio Waves Music Festival; Sugarloaf: The North Shore Stewardship Association, $800 for Summer Sensations at Sugarloaf Cove.

Funds are generally granted for initiatives that meet the changing needs of the Cook County region in the areas of arts, community development, education, environment, human services, and youth.

Grant priorities are to strengthen community ties between individuals and collaboration between organizations within the county; address underlying causes of community problems; undertake studies on matters that impact civic issues or public policy; build an organization’s program and/or management capacity; respond to community needs that require moderate grant money but produce significant results; and are new in nature and require start-up funds.
