The 33rd annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament was a success despite less than ideal circumstances. Tournament directors John Muus and Mark Summers knew they would be very fortunate to complete all of the tennis matches for this popular tournament, given the facts that they only had two tennis courts available and the weather was supposed to be rainy, off and on, all weekend.
Because of the reconstruction of three tennis courts, the Cook County Tennis Association decided to cut back on the number of events offered in the tennis tournament.
Twenty-six junior players made up 27 entrees for the junior (Challenger 1) tournament. Fifty-six participants made up 82 entrees, in various events, for the adult 2009 Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament. This turnout, despite the limited number of events this year, demonstrates the popularity of this tennis tournament and the fact that many people enjoy coming to Cook County to play tennis, and enjoy our beautiful community and environment.
To help keep the matches close to schedule, no-ad scoring was used and a match tiebreak (10 pts.) was played in place of a third set.
A free ice cream social was provided by the Cook County Tennis Association, on Saturday, for all those in attendance at the tournament. Everyone had a great time, despite the less than ideal weather conditions, and most of the participants said they would be back next year.
