The North House Folk School’s Wooden Boat Show on June 22-25 was once again well attended by fans of boating and chowder and traditional crafts. Far left: Campus visitors check out a birch bark canoe. Above left: Everyone has a boat story to share! Above middle: North House Director Greg Wright shouts out what everyone had been waiting to hear, “Chowder’s ready!” Above right: One of many of the talented craftsmen working on campus during the boat show was Roger Abrahamson, who carved one-of-a-kind wooden bowls.
The Summer Solstice Pageant performed by the Good Harbor Hill Players on Saturday night, June 23, was warm and whimsical, with a delightful array of woodland animals keeping “Granny” company. There was plenty of room for the performance this year on the newly constructed commons, with built-in bleachers for most of the audience. Left: One of the stars of the pageant was this energetic hummingbird who was credited with bringing Granny to her little house in the woods. Middle: The audience hears that Granny lives alone…but does she really? She climbs to the rooftop to summon the wind to change the seasons, encountering critters of all kinds. Right: In the spring, a naughty bear arrives, causing chaos as he interrupts Granny’s maple syrup collecting, knocking over buckets and making a mess. But never fear, dashing out of the outhouse is caped crusader Super Granny who subdues the impudent bear and makes him clean up. Of course, Granny has a soft spot for the critters and the bear is rewarded with cake!
Spring also brings flowers to Granny’s house and in the Summer Solstice Pageant, the flowers grow quite tall—as if they had stilts for stems!
Granny takes care of her beautiful garden, gently sprinkling the flowers with water. The little flower girls played their part well, uncurling and stretching to the sky.
