125 pounds of prescription drugs collected in take-back effort

The Cook County Sheriff ’s Office Prescription Drug Take-Back Program produced approximately 125 pounds of medication to be incinerated by the Drug Enforcement Agency. The Sheriff ’s Office held a special prescription round-up day on Saturday, at three locations across the county.

“Thank you to everyone who turned in their unused/unwanted medications during this Drug Take- Back event,” said Chief Deputy Will Sandstrom. “This was an opportunity for the public to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs and your participation is greatly appreciated.”

Studies show most abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. Disposing of unused medicines by flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose additional potential safety, health and environmental hazards.

Citizens can also bring their unwanted medications to the receptacle in the lobby of the Law Enforcement Center any day of the year.
