100-plus tennis players hit the courts for Fisherman’s Picnic tennis tournament

A total of 101 tennis players, making up 161 entries in various events, participated in the 36th annual Fisherman’s Picnic Tennis Tournament, Aug. 1-5 at the public tennis courts in Grand Marais. Tennis players came from as far away as Florida and Texas to participate in this tournament. The weather wasn’t ideal at times, but the players were able to finish the tournament on schedule. A number of junior matches were played under the lights Thursday evening due to rain delays. Not only was the turnout for the tournament great, but the competition in every event was strong. This made for exciting matches and fun tennis to watch. Many matches were determined by a match tie-breaker.

Exciting matches for Senior and Master players

The Senior (age 50 and over) and Master (age 60 and over) events started Wednesday, Aug. 1 and concluded Thursday morning. All matches consisted of 2 sets and a 10-point match tiebreak if players split sets.

Rick Picard (White Rock, NM) won the Men’s 60 Singles championship, defeating Malcolm Macaulay (Duluth), 6-2,6-2.

Malcolm Macaulay and Rick Picard won the Men’s 50 Doubles championship, defeating Scott Bergstrom and John Muus, both of Grand Marais 4-6,6-3,1-0 (5).

John Jackson (Minnetonka) and Carl Johnson (Green Valley, AZ) won the Men’s 70 Doubles championship, defeating George Oullis and Rod Wannebo, both of Grand Marais 6-2,6-1.

In the Women’s 50 Doubles Dorothy Jackson (Minnetonka) and Laural Swifka (Green Valley, AZ) won the championship, defeating Lynne Chalmers and Carolyn Herron, 6-4,6-4.

Dorothy Jackson and Marv Weber (Appleton, WI) won the Mixed 50 Doubles championship, defeating Jim and Laural Swifka (Green Valley, AZ), 6-4,6- 4.

Juniors

The Fisherman’s Picnic Jr. Tennis Tournament had 31 participants making up 40 entries in various events. The regular matches consisted of 2 sets and a 10-point match tie-break if players split sets and the consolation matches consisted of an 8-game pro set.

In the Boys’ 18 Singles 3-person round robin competition, Mohanad Al Houni (Golden Valley) won the championship by defeating Paul Raner (Clear Lake, IA), 6-0,6-0, and Lars Scannell (Grand Marais), 6-0,6-1. In the other match, Lars Scannell defeated Paul Raner, 6-3,6-2.

In the Girls’ 18 Singles semifinals, Lily Foley (North Oaks) defeated Brylee Seitz (Mountain Iron), 6-0,6-2, and Mackenzie Rixe (Rogers) defeated Hattie Scott (Oak Park), 6-1,6-0. Lily Foley won the championship, defeating Mackenzie Rixe in a close match 7-5,7-5. Brylee Seitz won the consolation championship, defeating Hattie Scott, 8-1.

In the Boys’ 16 Singles, Martin Schneider (Duluth) won the championship, defeating Dominik Kraemer (Brainerd) 6-0,6-1. Rudy Lipovetz (Golden Valley) won the consolation championship, defeating Dalton Werckman, 8-5.

In the Boys’ 14 Singles Joe Lipovetz (Golden Valley) won the championship, defeating Ryan Ortega (Winona) 6-1, 6-3. In the consolation semifinals, Elliot Schneider (Duluth) defeated Ben Mattson, (Golden Valley) 8-2, and Pete Summers (Grand Marais) defeated Sam Sajdak (Grand Rapids), 8-0. Elliot Schneider won the consolation championship, defeating Pete Summers, 8-3.

In the Girls’ 14 Singles Sarah Ismail (Midland, MI) won the championship, defeating Gina Stoner (Madison Lake), 6-0,6-0. Alyssa Boudreau (Thunder Bay, ONT) won the consolation championship, defeating Anna Seitz (Mountain Iron) 8-4, and Alyssa Martinson (Grand Marais), 8-1.

 

 

In the Boys’ 12 Singles Bryce Bodak (Thunder Bay, ONT) won the championship, defeating Sam Hanson (St. Paul) , 6-1,7-6 (5). Seth Kemp (Grand Marais) won the consolation championship, defeating Tristen Bockovich (Grand Marais), 8-3.

In the Boys’ 10 Singles championship, played with smaller court dimensions and with orange low compression balls, Benjamin Hanson (St. Paul) defeated Nate Bilben (Grand Marais), 4-0,4-2.

In the Boys’ 16 Doubles 3-team round robin competition, Mohanad Al Houni (Golden Valley) and Rudy Lipovetz (Golden Valley) won the championship by defeating Dominik Kraemer (Brainerd) and Lars Scannell (Grand Marais), 7-5,4- 6,1-0 (7), and Martin and Elliot Schneider (Duluth), 6-2,6-1. DJ Kraemer and Lars Scannell won the other match against Martin and Elliot Schneider, 6-4,3-6,1-0 (7).

In the Boys’ 14 Doubles championship match, Pete Summers (Grand Marais) and Joe Lipovetz (Golden Valley) won when Connor and Logan Scott had to withdraw because of personal circumstances.

Adults

The adult tournament had 70 tennis players, making up 121 entries, participating in the adult tournament events, including the seniors and masters events.

In the Men’s Open Singles David Bergstrom (Grand Marais) won the championship, defeating Guthrie Coughlin (Staples), 6-4,6-4.

In the Women’s Open Singles Alexis Gunderson (Virginia) won the championship defeating Macy McMakin (Grand Saline, TX) in a tough match, 2-6,6-3,6-4.

In the Men’s Open Doubles Jason Muhl (Savage) and Bryan Turunen (Plymouth) won the championship in a close match by defeating David Bergstrom and Guthrie Coughlin, 6-4,6- 7(3),6-1.

In the Women’s Open Doubles 3-team round-robin competition, Alexis and Taylor Gunderson (Virginia) won the championship by defeating Lee Bergstrom (Grand Marais) and Rachael Renneisen (Ft Lauderdale, FL), 6-3,6- 2, and Isabella and Madeline Swanson (Minneapolis), 6-3,6- 3. Lee Bergstrom and Rachael Renneisen won the other match, defeating Isabella and Madeline Swanson, 6-3,4-6,1-0 (6)

In the Mixed Open Doubles David Bergstrom and Rachael Renneisen (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) won the championship, defeating DJ and Kayla Kraemer (Brainerd), 6-2,6-2.

In the NTRP Combined Men’s 8.0 Doubles Carl Johnson and Marv Weber won the championship in a close match, defeating Mark and Pete Summers of Grand Marais , 6-3,1-6,1-0 (9).

In the NTRP Combined Mixed 8.0 Doubles Brent Mooney (Salina, KS) and Rachael Renneisen won the championship, defeating Mark Barlett (Overland Park, KS) and Macy McMakin (Grand Saline, TX), 4-6,6-2,1-0 (1).

In the NTRP Combined Mixed 7.0 Doubles 3-team round-robin competition, Pete Summers and Cecilia Schnobrich (Grand Marais) won the championship defeating Robert and Marilyn Brush (St. Paul), 2-6,6- 3,1-0 (9) and Tyler Sajdak (Grand Rapids, MI) and Sara Raner (Clear Lake, IA), 5-7,6-4,1-0 (3). Robert and Marilyn Brush won the other match, defeating Tyler Sajdak and Sara Raner, 6-3,7-5.

In the NTRP Combined Women’s 7.0 Doubles championship match, Kathy Bolstad (Grand Marais) and Lynne Chalmers (East Grand Forks) defeated Carolyn Herron (Dent) and Kathryn Weber (Appleton, WI), 6-2,6-3.
