1 percent money should give community more

Regarding the January 26 article and Commissioner Sue Hake’s comments that the community center bids came in over budget: Wow, I’ll bet nobody saw that coming!

I realize that the Community Center/ YMCA is a done deal (and probably has been a done deal since long before any of us knew it was even being considered). I’d like to suggest that any further use of 1percent sales tax funds be treated as investments.

By that I mean, let’s try to turn that money into something that will actually draw more visitors here, to spend more money here, generating more tax revenues here.

I’ve got nothing against a community center (Don’t we already have a community center that sits empty most of the time?) but nobody comes here to visit the YMCA (I know, they come here for the high speed Internet).

Someday that 1 percent tax money will run out, and we should have something more to show for it than a hole in the ground for us to pour even more money into. We should demand that any further uses of the 1percent tax money go toward things that will continue to generate business for Cook County.
