Gunflint Hills plays to a tee

A big thank you to the groundskeepers at our local golf course. The fairways are much more playable, as are the areas around the greens. Those greens are close to perfect. My putting still stinks, but that’s another story. Thanks for your expertise and hard work! Tim Sullivan, Grand Marais

Politics

My daughter-in-law, Laurence, stood tall and so very French in downtown St. Paul to say the pledge, to become an American citizen. More than fifty others stood as well, all bonded by common words spoken through accents ranging from Canadian to Thai, Argentinean to Australian, Somali to Sudanese. The judge reminded us that, however archaic the words, everyone in our […]

A healthy humanist civilization is not God dependent

After reading too many grim opinions expressed about our declining civilization I am reminded of a different view. Civilization has survived the dark ages, witch hunts, burnings, and vicious crusades when Christians attempted to force their view on others. Fortunately, our American forefathers had the good sense to separate church from state leaving each free to follow his own chosen […]

Leave no trace? Apparently not!

A friend of mine came up to Cook County this past weekend to visit and we decided to travel up the Gunflint Trail to Birch Lake. I hadn’t been up there for several years and we thought it might be fun to try and fish from the shore. Once we got down the steps to the lake shore, I was […]

I’ve just about reached my limit. Not that I’m ready to chuck reason or throw caution to the wind. I still want to examine carefully personal practices that might affect […]

From 1965 to 1967, I worked as a budget examiner for the U. S. Bureau of the Budget (BOB), now Office of Management and Budget (OMB). (For a moment it was called the Office of Budget and Management until an unfortunate acronym appeared.) My job involved reviewing programs and budgets of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Civil Works program, […]

A retrospective exhibit “Standing In the Northern Lights” opened at the Minnesota Museum of Art in Saint Paul during May and June. The show includes works spanning 44 years of Morrison’s artistic career. Morrison said, “Indians always had a reverence […]
