Standing tall in a field of colorful lupines, this moose seems perfectly at home, posing while noted outdoor photographer Tom Spence snaps its picture. During the recent heat it’s far more common to find a moose cooling down in a pond, a great place to lounge while also avoiding the thick marauding flies that like to attack moose.

The Grand Marais Lion’s Club is proud to once again sponsor the annual Fourth of July fireworks. Are you tired of familiar words? Howling at the moon helps

I’ve recently been self-diagnosed with UDCS, Unprecedented Disproportional Capacity Syndrome. It’s a psychological disorder brought on by repetitious misuse of annoying words used in reference to any and all things that relate to a topical subject. There are few legal pharmacological cures, but avoiding all radio, television and social media platforms seems to quell the recurring onset of symptoms. Self-espoused […]

Frances or Francis, Do You Know the Difference?

As I read the June 27 obituary for Bonnie Francis Johnson, I noticed her middle name was misspelled. And others I’ve noticed as well. Many years ago, in the mid 1960s, we were living at the Sea Gull Guard Station (Russ grew up there) and I met many friends. Among them were Clayton and Frances Oliver on the Gull River. […]
