April’s supermoon is one of the brightest moons of the year. The moon appears larger because it is within 90 percent of perigee, which is the supermoon’s closest approach to the earth. Call it super if you want, it’s big, bold, beautiful and lights up the sky better than any man made light.
Park board agrees to open Recreation Park to seasonal campers
The Grand Marais park and recreation board passed a unanimous motion to open the RV Park and Campground to seasonal self-contained boats and RV’s only at the board’s Tuesday, May 5 meeting. A glitch in the audio prevented the park board members from being heard during the 45-minute meeting, but the park board members could be seen discussing the agenda. […]

As an ongoing project, the Nature Conservancy will continue to reforest land along Highway 61, this time near the Cascade Beach Road between the Highway 61 mile marker 97 and mile marker 99. Because Cook County owns some of the property along this stretch, Nature Conservancy representative Justin Pszwaro came before the county board on April 30 requesting permission from […]

Second homeowners have all the rights and responsibilities of permanent Grand Marais residents. That said, Jennifer Shultz’ letter is a naive response to […]
What do we know about slippery slopes like the Lutsen Ski Hill expansion?
As I read the rundown on how this process will unfold, several concerns came to mind. The article did not suggest that these areas were a part of the discovery or action plan so here are my concerns: There was early mention that the 600 acres may include an historic Native American village. What do we know about that, what […]
Gentrification
British Sociologist Ruth Glass coined the phrase “gentrification” in the 1960s to describe the process of changing the character of a community through the influx of more affluent residents. Gentrification often shifts a neighborhood’s composition and average household income by developing new, more expensive housing. The gentrification process is typically the result of increasing attraction to an area by people […]
Who is that masked (maker) man?
Bob Pranis, who owns a 3D printer and has a big heart, has been very busy making face shields for first responders and health professionals. Now they have enough, and Bob is offering to make them for business folks who come face-to-face with their customers. The shields would offer one additional level of safety, on top of face masks and […]
