Celebrity charity golf scramble a tremendous success
Gunflint Hills golf course was alive with golfers from near and far last Sunday afternoon as 13 four-person teams gathered to participate in the first annual YMCA/Community Education fundraising golf tournament. “We raised $7,500 for after-school program, camp, and youth in government scholarships,” said an enthusiastic Y director, Emily Marshall. Part of the fun began before the first shot was […]
Front door glass broken at Cornerstone Community Church
Sometime between 8 p.m. on Monday, July 29 and Tuesday at 8 a.m. kids or presumably young adults were spinning gravel circles in the Cornerstone Community Church parking lot when one of the rocks thrown up by a tire shattered the glass of one side of the front door of the church. Pastor Dale McIntire said he realizes that it’s […]

Some new teachers will be in I.S.D. 166 classrooms this fall to greet multitudes of excited children who will be eagerly returning from summer vacations revived and ready to exuberantly dive head first into their studies. Well, that’s the hope anyway. Steven Anderson was hired as the new middle school English language arts teacher. He has previous experience teaching middle […]
Public meeting held on Pike Lake Road reconstruction project
All of the chairs were filled in the Cook County commissioners room on Thursday, July 25, at 6 p.m. as people gathered to listen to Brad Scott give a presentation on the upcoming Pike Lake Road (CR 45) reconstruction project, and answer questions from the audience. This was the third public meeting held on this topic, and Scott, who works […]
Grand Marais Arts Festival was great
I recently participated in the Grand Marais Arts Festival. I just wanted to take a minute to express my experience with this festival and Grand Marais. This was my first time participating in this event; my wife and I made the trek up from the Twin Cities. I cannot tell you how pleased we were with this whole event. The […]
Beware of who you point fingers at!
WOW! I’m overwhelmed that my whimsical sarcastic diatribe has created such a public discussion. I find it disheartening that some have chosen to make it political. The self-appointed chosen elite have decided that disagreement is hate speech. The elite that profess tolerance and inclusion label everyone that disagrees with them as hateful. They love to throw out terms such as […]
New law bars use of e-cigarettes in most indoor workplaces, public places starting Aug. 1
Starting Aug. 1, laws protecting Minnesotans from exposure to deadly secondhand smoke will expand to include the use of e-cigarettes and vapes. Under the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, the use of e-cigarettes and vapes, often called vaping, will be subject to the same prohibitions and restrictions as cigarette smoking, protecting Minnesotans from exposure to e-cigarette use in all restaurants, […]
Correction
In the Fisherman’s Picnic guide it said that the Grand Marais Lions sends two-thirds of their proceeds to Lions International. It should have said the Grand Marais Lions send one-third of their collected donations to Lions International and the rest stays in the community. The Cook County News-Herald regrets the mistake.
Paying their share
Once again, we are reminded non-taxable government agencies are the largest landowners in northeastern Minnesota. Of Cook County’s 2,137,600 acres, for instance, 91 percent is owned by government agencies; leaving 9 percent taxable. Because the majority of local governments are largely financed by property taxes, this inability to tax the property values from non-taxable government agencies unquestionably affects Cook County’s […]
