There were over 1,000 people attending the Tofte July 4th festivities, with the intermittent rain holding off for the hour-long parade. Food vendors, games for kids, live music, and booths filled with many items for sale were available to the public. The longest line for food was the one manned by the Tofte firefighters and EMS workers. While many people […]
City Council tables decision on Climate Action Plan
In the wake of George Wilkes’ cancellation of his scheduled appearance before the Grand Marais City council on Wednesday, July 10, the council tabled its decision on the proposal he had submitted to pass a resolution supporting the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act. Simply put, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act assesses a steadily rising fee on the […]
Commissioners seeking vendor to manage county’s vacation rental program
Cook County commissioners authorized Land Services to post a “Request for Proposals” for the purpose of soliciting vendors who could set up and operate a web-based license application and compliance tracking system to help the county administer the Vacation Rental Compliance Monitoring Program for the approximately 270 vacation rental businesses operating in Cook County. The vote came at the board’s […]
Junior Ranger Aida Frey pays a visit to Isle Royale
Aida Frey is called Sweetheart of the National Parks for good reason. Aida, along with her mother and father, have driven more than 100,000 miles over the last eight years in their quest to visit some of America’s most unique, protected places. In that time the Chicago suburb native has visited more than 300 national parks. To be precise, the […]
City explains wastewater treatment facility odor

The Grand Marais wastewater treatment plant processes all of the waste that is flushed or drained to […]

Compared to other N.E. Minn. counties, Cook County pays on the low end of the salary scale for its top department heads
After reading Gordon Salisbury’s column in the News-Herald’s June 28 issue, I wish to comment on his “first item…(regarding) large pay and compensation increases given to department heads at the county offices.” My problem with his analysis is that his calculations were based only on Cook County results. To secure and retain qualified and above average personnel serving in Cook […]
Four years under county administrator Cadwell
$1,831,643 (34 percent) increase in the county payroll since 2014 based on inappropriate wage comparisons outside of the findings of the Keystone Study (which cost about $50,000). A tax levy increase of $2,719,431 (38.5 percent) from 2016 to 2019, the highest in the state. Eleven department heads/directors reporting to Cadwell received a combined $162,962 salary increase from 2017-19 (17.4 percent). […]
Thank you Professor John Abraham
Your letter got me to your website and publications which I read with great interest. You and I may only disagree on the contribution of man’s activities to global warming. Your many climate analysis and comments focus on the last few hundred years of the global heating cycle. My studies were focused on the daily-recorded high and low temperatures for […]
