A friendly crowd of both young and old gathered at Grand Portage American Legion Post 2009 on Nov. 12 for a Veteran’s Day celebration. Included in the mix was a group of earnest elementary students from Oshki Ogimaag Charter School. The observance began at 10:30 a.m. with a Drum Ceremony from the Stone Bridge Drummers, followed by raising the flags […]
Grand Marais PUC discusses rates for 2019
If the PUC agrees to the proposals set forth by City Administrator Mike Roth at the board’s Wednesday, November 14 meeting, the only rate increase Grand Marais utility users will see next year is a 2 percent bump in their sewer bill. Roth recommended no rate increase for the Water fund budget or for the Electric fund budget. The Public […]
Recount called for in City Council, County Board elections
It’s not exactly Florida, but Cook County has some election recounts of its own. A recount of city council ballots cast in the November 6 election was held, and after it was all done, Anton Moody was declared the winner of a four-year term. Craig Schulte requested the recount. The county will pay the expense for the recount because it […]
Highlights of county board’s Nov. 13 meeting
Commissioners approved posting a part-time YMCA custodian job for a 10-16 hour per week position. Currently, there is only one custodian assigned to clean the Y. In June two YMCA custodian positions opened up, and only one full-time person was hired to replace the two workers. The job is open to being done in either early morning or evenings. Judy […]

Winter arrived unannounced last Friday, November 9, spilling almost a foot of snow in places in the county and making the streets slippery for motorists, as evidenced here. The driver of this vehicle lost traction coming down the old Gunflint Trail and slid across Highway 61, nearly clipping the yellow office building owned by North House Folk School. Luckily the […]
Dubious Distinction
I’ll keep this short and–unfortunately– not so sweet. Once again, we’ve reached that time of year when blaze orange is all the fashion rage; turkeys are being plumped and plucked for the plate; and taxpayers are being guisingly (typically concealing the true nature of something) groomed by local governing authorities on the merits of spending more of your hard-earned dollars […]
Deer and moose can co-exist
As I see itThe letter in the Nov. 10 issue regarding deer management appears to be based on very limited information and assumptions. The statement that the D.N.R. assumes deer and moose cannot co-exist is bogus. As D.N.R. Area Wildlife Manager at Grand Marais from 1969- 2000, we knew they can co-exist here, but not at high population levels of both. The writer […]

On Wednesday, October 24 U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) announced that three of her bipartisan bills to combat the opioid epidemic have been signed into law as part of the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) for Patients and Communities Act. The Synthetic Abuse and Labeling of Toxic Substances (SALTS) Act, which Klobuchar introduced with Sen. […]
Cook County Activists protest in support of protecting the Mueller Investigation
Activists in Cook County will join a nationwide protest in support of protecting Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Russian interference in the 2016 election. The protests come in response to President Trump installing longtime ally Matthew Whitaker as Acting Attorney General, taking over oversight of the Mueller investigation from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The activists will demand […]
