Stover’s last day here will be Sept. 22. On Sept. 25, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., there will be a reception for Sandy at the Clinic. This past week Stover […]

Principal resigns from I.S.D. 166

Dr. William (Bill) DeWitt resigned from his I.S.D. 166 P.K.-12 principal position at the school board’s August 16 meeting. His wife, Sarah, also resigned from her physical education teaching job. Dr. DeWitt’s last day is September 1, but he is taking leave he accrued, so his last working day was the day of the school board meeting. The DeWitts are […]

County gets first look at 2019 budget

At first blush, said Cook County Auditor/Treasurer Braidy Powers, the 2019 proposed levy of 8.1 percent doesn’t look too bad. Especially, he said, when the board was usually looking at an initial levy “in the high twenties.” Powers was addressing the Cook County Board of Commissioners at the board’s Tuesday, August 21 meeting. Lutsen Resort, Minnesota’s oldest and one of the state’s grandest resorts, sold on August 15 to Bryce Campbell and his mother, Sheila, owners of North Shore Resort Company. What Happened to Virtue?

Ever since Plato invited Socrates and a few of his friends over to chat on the subject of virtue–following a little Greek tragedy–the use of the word virtue in our daily vocabulary has steadily declined to the point where it’s almost non-existent. As a clubhouse attendant for 16 years under his leadership, it had been a pleasure to work for him and with the past and current staff. Mike treated us all with dignity and respect. To our local golfers and city campground patrons, and […]

Thank you to all who made my day so special

Thank you to everyone who came from near and far to my 80th birthday party. So many relatives and friends traveled a long distance: Canada, Wisconsin, Ohio and all over Minnesota. Thanks for other cards and gifts and well wishes. A special thanks to my niece Mary and family and friends for the work and food it took to put […]

Writer feels B2B route will detract from area’s peace and quiet

I’m writing to add my voice to the many others who have written or attended meetings to oppose the DNR’s proposed B2B off road vehicle trail. What makes Cook County special for residents as well as visitors is the incredible environment—Lake Superior, the Gunflint Trail, the BWCAW, and all the lakes, streams and forests that we all love to enjoy. […]

Were dirty politics at play with Ellison?

It was most convenient for a last minute, two days before the primary, attack on Ellison who is running for Minnesota attorney general. It reminds me of the successful attack on Franken, which caused the resignation of the most vocal voice in the U.S. Senate. Now another (at least yet) unsubstantiated attack on another loud voice who intends to give […]
