Cook County-Grand Marais Airport receives nearly $3 million grant
Cook County received some good news May 19 when a congressional delegation announced it had secured $2.9 million from the U.S. Department of Transportation to extend the Cook County-Grand Marais Airport runway. The money will be put towards the county’s $5 million project that will lengthen the runway from 4,200 feet to 5,000 feet. The news came from U.S. Senators […]
Nearly 400 turn out for first-ever Ruby’s Pantry event
The first-ever Ruby’s Pantry food distribution went extremely well, with nearly 400 people lining up at School District 166 to take part. The line to register started by the Sawtooth Elementary School gym and wound through the school and nearly out the playground door. No one seems to mind the wait as neighbors visited with one another and new friends […]
Garages and growlers discussed at city council
Grand Marais City Council’s May 13 meeting included discussions of the farmer’s market, Sunday growler sales, energy savings and vacation rentals. Councilor and planning commission member Tim Kennedy began the proceedings with a recap of the planning commission’s May 6 meeting, during which approval was granted for a variance and conditional use permit. The variance was granted to David and […]
Tofte senior housing project sees delay
On a greening wooded hillside not far above the Birch Grove Community Center work has begun to lay out the lots for Tofte Senior Housing. Red tape and wooden stakes surround the property where the six duplexes will sit. A well has been dug and a rough road pushed in. But much more needs to be done before Dynamic Homes […]
Overwhelmed by dance performance
I can’t help but be overwhelmed with gratitude for last weekend’s Breakthrough dance performance! Women and girls of all sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and in all seasons of life took the stage to perform playful, edgy, and soulful dances. It was a heartening example of the amazing things that emerge from this community when we have the courage to come together […]
Taxpayers should be reimbursed
As a concerned citizen of Cook County, I would like to know if we will be adequately reimbursed for the use of our highway department equipment for personal benefit of the Klegstad employee. I contacted one of the county commissioners about this and received a response that the county will not be going after him for repayment to the taxpayers […]
Cook County does have limited shoulder widths
I’m writing to correct and clarify the reporter’s paraphrasing of my comments on May 12, 2015 to Cook County commissioners regarding all-terrain vehicle (ATV) use on certain portions of the Gunflint Trail. The Cook County News-Herald reporter wrote that I “thought the shoulders were wide enough to accommodate ATVs….” I did not say that at all. I had responded to […]
Governor explains veto of education bill
The Minnesota House of Representatives adjourned just before midnight, on May 15, 2015 and the Senate a few minutes later. But major items of legislation were left hanging, including a $107 million bonding bill, after time ran out in which to clean up differences separating the two bodies. As the session ended, there was a question of whether or not […]
A pat on the back for parents
It’s been a busy few weeks for the community, especially for our local schools as they wrap up the school year. It’s been an adventure as Brian Larsen and I struggle to remember when and where all the events are taking place. We’ve been juggling and rearranging schedules to try to be everywhere to get photos. And then, we have […]
