Down Memory Lane

10 YEARS AGOAUG. 1, 2003 Coast Guard Admiral Ronald Silva, responsible for command of all of the Great Lakes, and other high-ranking officials visited the Grand Marais Coast Guard Station on Monday. Silva and Master Chief Petty Officer Bryan Clemons have been traveling together on a two-part mission. Clemons said they want to “physically see every plant, harbor and facility […]

Legislation allows states to regulate logging road runoff

Under a recent bill passed by the U.S. Senate, water runoff on logging roads will fall under the jurisdiction of the states and not under the purview of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In May, a group of House and Senate members introduced a Silviculture Regulatory Consistency Act, reaffirming the EPA’s 37-year-old policy toward regulation of runoff from forest roads. […]

The Cook County Highway Department will begin work on the Durfee Creek crossing on County Road 60 the week of Aug. 5. The scope of the project includes replacing the existing corrugated metal pipe with a bottomless aluminum arch set on concrete footings. This will enhance the stream crossing, facilitate fish passage and improve the roadway. County crews have begun […]

New rules on handling construction runoff

Protecting lakes and streams from construction runoff is the purpose of a statewide permit recently approved by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) Citizens’ Board. The MPCA explains that construction runoff can contain pollutants, such as sediment that fills in lakes and wetlands, nutrients that fuel algal blooms, and chemicals harmful to fish and other life. Severe erosion can threaten […]

Neighbors assist in rescue of man after canoe overturns

Cook County Law Enforcement dispatchers frequently receive calls reporting an overturned boat in the waters of Lake Superior. Most of the calls are unfounded, such as the one to which the U.S. Coast Guard responded on July 22. That turned out to be a log in the water, not a man clinging to a canoe. However, on Sunday, July 28 […]

Bear cautions issued at local campgrounds

There have been a number of unwelcome interactions with bear at local campgrounds over the last month, warranting a mention in Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officer report and a U.S. Forest Service “Special Bear Alert.” Bears determined to be “bothersome” have been spotted in the Clearwater Lake area in Grand Marais, the Kimball Lake campground in Grand […]

DNR offers fewer wolf licenses

A smaller Minnesota wolf population means fewer hunting and trapping licenses will be available when the wolf season opens Nov. 9. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) set the statewide target harvest of wolves at 220 – 180 fewer than last season. Starting Aug. 1, hunters and trappers can apply for 2,000 early-season and 1,300 late-season licenses. That’s a reduction […]

County approves payment requests on 1 percent projects

Projects to be funded by the county’s 1 percent recreation and infrastructure sales tax continue to move forward. On July 23, 2013, the county board authorized an agreement with the Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) to grant $3,100,000 to the EDA for improvements at Superior National at Lutsen Golf Course. The improvements will include purchasing four acres of […]
