Rain plagues youth baseball season
This week youth baseball was dominated by one thing—rain! However, there were a few teams that were able to get their games in. T-ball plays on Monday nights and both June 18 and 25 were sunny and dry. We don’t keep score in T-ball, but every week both teams have fun. In that way everybody wins. We have six teams […]
The Off Season
There is a saying that basketball teams are made from November to March, but that basketball players are made from March to November. It expresses the shifting balance between the development of individual skills and the application of those skills in specific settings or toward specific goals. Schools are specific settings and academic standards with specific goals in the application […]
Turtle Races
The painted turtles are beginning their annual reproductive activities, which include a slow- motion game of chicken on the roadways. The soft shoulders alongside our roads are easy places for the turtles to bury their eggs. The digging is easy and the ground is flat and boulder free. The downfall, of course, is that the turtles get run over a […]

The All-Terrain Vehicle Association of MN made an attempt to reclaim the record for the World’s Longest ATV Parade in Silver Bay, MN, on Saturday, June 23, 2012. The organization fell about 800 machines short of taking the record back from Utah. However, the thousand-plus ATV enthusiasts—including many Cook County ATVers— who attended the parade attempt and other weekend activities […]

Minnesota’s ruffed grouse spring drumming counts were lower than last year across most of the bird’s range, according to a survey conducted by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Compared with drumming counts conducted in 2011, 2012 survey results showed an average decline of 24 to 60 percent, to 1.1 drums per stop, in the northeast survey region, which […]
Where are the fish biting?
Jon at Buck’s Hardware Hank has this week’s report: Brule Lake walleyes were abundant last week as people were using leeches and crawlers in 12 to 20 feet on jigs and floating jigs. A slow troll was also useful with live rigs and even Rapalas. Smallies were hitting in 8 to 15 feet with crawlers or spinners. Beetle spins and […]
Conservation Officer Tales
Although the Cook County News-Herald knows that the majority of sportsmen and women are law-abiding folks, there are a few that run afoul of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Conservation Officers. Periodically, the DNR provides a report of some of the miscreants the Conservation Officers (CO) have encountered. The News-Herald shares these stories as a reminder to all […]
