Pagami Creek fire burns 100,000 acres

It is a record that no one in Minnesota wanted to break. The Pagami Creek fire, which originated in the Ely area on August 18 and has plagued the North Shore with smoke for several weeks, is close to becoming the largest wildfire in Minnesota’s history, equaling or surpassing the devastating 1918 Cloquet fire. At press time, the wildfire, started […]

County labors to keep levy down

By using $2,000,000 from a BWCA fund the county maintains from U.S. Forest Service payments and by chipping away at proposed expenses in numerous departments, the county board was able to set its preliminary 2012 levy at $6,266,458, or 2.75% over this year’s levy. Kudos to the crew

I cannot express my many thanks to the crew at the Legion. I know I will forget someone, so I’ll say I’m sorry now. First off, so many thanks to Scott and Julie, along with their parents Art and Barb Puch. If we could bestow this work ethic they have in the younger generation, the world would be a better […]

Respect the flag—especially on Patriot Day

September 11, 2011 was a beautiful Sunday on the North Shore. We spent the day in the woods, pausing occasionally to reflect on the contrast of this same day 10 years ago when over 3,000 Americans were murdered in a terrorist attack on American soil. We tuned the radio to the Vikings game and it was uplifting to listen to […]
