It was a bitter competition in the Schroeder Township elections this year, but the victors were gracious and the losers took it well. With 16 people sitting anxiously on the edge of their seats after the polls closed on Tuesday, March 8, 2011, Town Clerk Carol Tveekrem (standing) announced that Roger “Bill” McKeever had kept his seat on the town […]
Lutsen: fire hall yes; fireworks no
The Lutsen Township annual meeting didn’t last long—in fact it was over before two scheduled speakers made it to the meeting. Cook County Commissioner Bruce Martinson and George Wilkes of the Cook County Local Energy Project were busy at the Tofte and Schroeder annual meetings and didn’t make it to the Lutsen Town Hall before the Lutsen meeting ended at […]
Tofte and Schroeder reach emergency services agreement
Once again Paul James was called to moderate the annual Tofte township meeting, and once again he did a great job. In election news, Allan (DC) Olsen garnered 15 votes and won a three-year supervisor term and Mary Jane Huggins was elected treasurer with 16 votes. Emergency services report Fire Chief Richie Nelson reported that his crew had been paged […]
Tracking my bunny
It has really been a treat in recent weeks to look out my window at all the snow—and the flurry of animal activity taking place out there. We have an abundance of wildlife in our yard in all seasons, but they are more visible in the winter. The birds are going crazy, zipping from snowy branch to bird feeder and […]
A treasure indeed
I was happy to see Hartley Acero’s Feb. 26 letter to the editor, A forgotten treasure? I agree that Lake View Natural Dairy, located just seven miles up the Gunflint Trail, is a wonderful asset to our community for locals and visitors alike. Cook County is not exactly farming country, so we are indeed lucky to be able to get […]
Groundskeepers are vital to golf course
I’m writing in reply to last week’s letter to the editor Golf course can’t function without groundskeepers. Are groundskeepers important to the operation of Superior National at Lutsen golf course? Absolutely! That is one of the reasons SNL has budgeted to add to the groundskeeping staff and has designated funds to enable hourly increases for all, the first in five […]
Use wind power for state facilities
The issue I would like to address concerns the future of energy produced by the state of Minnesota and the opportunity it provides for budget-saving measures. As a resident of Minnesota I see we need to drastically cut the current budget. A way we can do this is to incorporate the well-known procedure of wind power. Minnesota is currently responsible […]

Michael Hendrickson, 41, Grand Portage was seriously injured on Saturday, February 26, 2011 in a snowmobile accident about 300 yards from the parking lot at Nor’wester Lodge on the Gunflint Trail. Apparently the 1995 Arctic Cat EXT snowmobile left the trail and struck a tree. Hendrickson suffered a lacerated liver, torn aorta, and eight broken ribs on his right side. […]
Correction:
In the March 5, 2011 article Two seriously injured in snowmobile accident, the Cook County News-Herald reported that the snowmobile involved in the accident belonged to Steven MacDonald of Grand Marais. Although the snowmobile’s registration had not been transferred to its new owner, MacDonald has informed the News-Herald that the snowmobile was sold in January 2011. The News-Herald apologizes for […]
