Republicans hold county convention

About a dozen hearty Republicans ventured from their homes on a cold March 1st evening to attend the local party’s yearly organizational meeting held at the Cook County Community Senior Center. This meeting was held to elect people to local office and to hear updates from elected representatives who serve Minnesota in Washington. Marc Breitsprecher and Garry Gamble were elected […]

CCVB: evolving and changing?

Learning that changes had been made and that Diane Brostrom- Lesman had left the Cook County Visitor’s Bureau (CCVB) in mid-February led some community members to ask why. Just under a year ago the CCVB happily announced that it was opening its doors at the corner of 5th Avenue and Highway 61 and introduced its “team,” of which Lesman was […]

Vehicles stranded after wrong turns onto snowmobile trails

At least twice in February motorists went astray and got stuck on area snowmobile trails. Groomers from local snowmobile clubs were called into service to rescue the stranded drivers. On Sunday, February 20, Lake County Law Enforcement received a call at 10:59 a.m. requesting help for a woman whose vehicle was stuck “in the ditch” by the Toohey Lake campground […]

Grabko told the EDA board that she was hopeful that a grant application for rehabilitation of not only homes, but also commercial buildings, would […]

This will shorten the school year by three days, allowing students to be out the door on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 instead of the following Monday, June 11. The board […]

One more week of winter wanted

If you are like my friend Jane, who is beginning to despair that winter will never end—stop reading now. If you think we have had more than enough snow or you think it has been too cold for too long, turn the page. Because I am going to wax poetic about snow again. I am so very happy that a […]

Stars not streetlights

Thank you, thank you, Rhonda, for your heartfelt appeal in your February 19, 2011 Unorganized Territory for star and moonlit night sky preservation as opposed to more streetlights! We all want highway safety. If a rural intersection is unclear, has a slightly larger reflective sign been considered? I don’t mean a billboard! Those reflective Adopt-a-Highway signs are very visible at […]

Peaceful cemetery no place for cell tower

When Hans Engelson and the Tofte brothers, Andrew and John, arrived in the area that is now known as Tofte, they must have been impressed with the pristine beauty of the land. A few years later when other members of their families immigrated from Halsnoy, Norway, they too recognized this special place that would be home. They (including my grandfather […]

Golf course can’t function without groundskeepers

I have worked as a seasonal groundskeeper at Superior National Golf Course since 2002. I recently talked with a golf course committee member. Initially he was irate that I would question his work as a dedicated volunteer. Questioning goes with the territory whether one is paid or a volunteer. The committee member agrees that I work for Superior National’s greatest […]
