Times have changed

Notice this: during Bush’s Iraq war (of choice), Republicans said “Support the President!” while Democrats asked “How to pay for this?” Now during Obama’s recovery (of necessity), it’s exactly the reverse—except that the Democrats actually answer the payment question, “Tax the rich!” J. Government is running amuck

I am writing to recommend the Liberty Council, a conservative, legal organization, which provides a very helpful overview of the proposed Health Care 3200 bill. Visit www.LC.org and click on “What Americans Need to Know About the Healthcare Takeover.” It is well worth reading. We need heath care reform. But not a wholesale government takeover of our entire health care […]

Books and buyers all important

Fisherman’s Picnic presents so many choices to residents and visitors that to hear the Annual Book Sale is a favorite activity is poetry to the ears of dozens of volunteers. From “Will we have enough books?” to “Will we have enough buyers?” many hours are spent to make the sale happen. Ina Sinkledam is the guide. Through the collecting, hauling, […]

Supervisor should work with, not against sewer district rep

In 1999, Bill McKeever and fellow town board members approved a motion regarding septic problems in Schroeder, supporting the concept of a sewer district. A letter to the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) was written and signed by Kevin Johnson citing the town’s problems and the Tofte Schroeder Sanitary Sewer District (TSSSD) was formed. Rick Anderson was eventually asked to […]

The “tale” of the Turkish student

Last week a letter to the editor told a one sided “tale” of a Turkish student who had a “disaster” of an experience while working for a local employer. As the owners of that business, we feel compelled to correct this one-sided story. Our business works incredibly hard to hire only locals. When we do hire from overseas, it is […]

Cervenka, Young exhibit at Johnson Heritage Post

Passion, grace, depth, whimsy – many words could be used to describe the artwork of Tim Young and Anne Cervenka on exhibit at Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais through September 6, 2009. Both artists greeted guests at the show’s opening Friday, July 31 in the thick of Fisherman’s Picnic. A four-panel mural of white pines and two totem paintings […]

Lioness 26th Annual Fundraiser a success

The Grand Marais Lioness Fundraiser on July 29 included a dinner buffet, a silent auction and a bake sale, and was very successful. The Lioness Annual Scholarship Award donates $1,000 to a graduating CCHS senior for continuing education. The 2009 scholarship was awarded […]
